Alvar Aalto's Maison Louis Carré - 1956

Just outside of Paris in Bazoches-sur-Guyonnes, sits a house designed by Alvar Aalto - The Maison Louis Carré.  Carré was a prominent French art dealer and collector that desired a house that would be able to accomodate his private life and art viewings.  With a friendship with Le Corbusier, Carré decided not to approach him because of his use of materials.  Instead, he commissioned Aalto to design his house in 1956 - which apparently caused considerable conflict.

As in many of his other works, Aalto created a work of art with Maison Louis Carré.  Much of the furniture and light fixtures were designed specifically just for this house.  For those of us who greatly appreciate his work, seeing them vastly increases our appreciation for them.  The Maison Louis Carré is really worth the visit.
